Pecan Corner: Barbarian Days: A Family Doctor's Home in the ...
A couple of weeks ago, we went to Cross Plains, Texas, and toured the Robert E Howard home as part of their "Barbarian Days Festival".? Howard's father was Dr. Isaac M. Howard. This simple frame house served as the family home, and, also, sometimes, doubled as Dr Howard's office where patients were seen. The home was continually in use as a place to live for various families from the time Dr Howard sold it until Cross Plains' Operation Pride recovered it for preservation in 1989.
?Since that time, they have worked to furnish it with period furnishings and house those artifacts they can obtain (such as the camel inkwell that stood on Howard's desk - a gift from Cecil Lotief, local Cross Plains? dry goods merchant - and first Texas legislator who had been born in Lebanon. He was first elected in 1932). Other furnishings are close copies of items either known to have been there, or true to the period.? Below is a photo of Bob Howard in front of this house, circa 1925.
My main interest was that I enjoy touring simple historical homes: the kind of house in which ordinary citizens lived a hundred years ago. In this case, the home of an ordinary small-town family physician. During that epoch in American history, there were similarities among all Americans of frugality, economy of space and furnishings, and natural closeness of proximity to household members and neighbors, that is readily apparent when we walk through such a home and consider how life would be lived in it.
?By today's standards, the author's cell-like bedroom/study (below) is tiny, cramped, and simple. But by the standards of the day (continuing even up into the 1970s in most of the country), it was probably much like the rooms of Howard's own unmarried peers. The room offered simple comfort, privacy, a bright and airy place in which to write and attend to the voluminous correspondence an author would keep up in that era when postcards and letters would be mailed daily for the same purposes email and messaging would serve today.?
The bare bulb was a common feature of most homes until new homes built in the prosperous 1950s and 60s popularized inexpensive, built-in light fixtures. My grandmother's house had several while I was growing up.? Our current house still had bare bulbs in the mid-1940s during WWII, when Rita's family first moved here, and it was the first time they had electricity. This house at that time had 4 rooms - and her family rented one of them out to a soldier and his wife, who kept all their household goods in that one small bedroom, brought pots out to cook and went back into their room to eat their meals! This gives an idea of how economically indoor space was used during these earlier eras.
?Porches were converted into bedrooms more often than not - and existing windows and doors were just left intact. During pre-electric times, such windows and doors still had use for ventilation and light, just like the transoms found above interior doors in so many old homes. If not needed to carry daylight and breezes, these unused windows and doors were often covered permanently with a heavy curtain or drape to block light and drafts, and furniture would be placed in front of it as though it were a solid wall.
My mother's house, of similar or slightly earlier vintage as this one, has two such converted porches: one very similar to this one resulted in her kitchen having a window-to-nowhere (well, technically, a window-into-the-next-room). Her kitchen also has another window that faces into the remaining screened "sleeping porch" that could have been, if needed, similarly converted. The other converted porch left a door-to-nowhere behind the sofa in her living room (but alas, there is no "door into summer"!).
Not only were bedrooms added to accommodate growing families, but also young adults tended to live at home until they married, and were given their own space by adding a room or converting a porch. Our house has a converted porch that we now use as the laundry room. but which once turned a crowded 4-room house into a three-bedroom home? and housed a family's sons, who had previously slept in the living room.
From the back, it is each to see the flat roof of the addition - also very common for what is known as "lean-to" add-ons. Our house has a similar flat roof over the portion added in the 1970s.
?
?I was particularly interested to see the plate block for Dr. Howard's original bookplate (or Ex Libris as some call them). It is a linoleum cut and bears the doctor's own signature. A corresponding print from it is framed with it, but I couldn't tell whether the plate was designed to make prints onto gummed paper for application, or to print directly onto a book's fore-leaf.
?The docents at the museum, all members of Cross Plains' Project Pride, were wonderful, and I appreciated their friendly guidance through the tour. Here is one of these nice ladies with the Cross Plains Centennial Quilt, displayed in Mr and Mrs Howard's bedroom of the home, to which she had contributed a square. Each block was made by local women to celebrate the town's history, and its recovery from the devastating wild fires that burned 130 homes and killed two people in 2005.
?We wrapped up the day with the Barbarian Festival in a lovely, oak-shaded park, complete with live music, free watermelon (courtesy of AMA-Techtel), Conan the Barbarian artwork, and fabulous food. There was even a car show. This is an annual event and it was a lot of fun. I hope we will be able to go again from time to time!

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congressional bargainers appeared to be closing in on a compromise that would head off a July 1 doubling of interest rates on federal loans to 7.4 million college students and end an election-year battle between President Barack Obama and Congress.
Senate aides from both parties said Friday the two sides were moving toward a deal on how to pay the measure's $6 billion price tag, the chief source of partisan conflict.
The goal is to push legislation through Congress next week so the current 3.4 percent interest rate on subsidized Stafford loans can be preserved for another year. A 2007 law gradually reduced interest rates on the loans but required them to balloon back to 6.8 percent this July 1 in a cost-saving maneuver.
On another front, the two sides were also close to an agreement to overhaul federal transportation programs, according to House and Senate aides from both parties. Negotiations were expected to continue through the weekend, with votes expected next week on either a major transportation bill or an extension of current programs, said the aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details of the talks.
Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address there was "no excuse for inaction."
"Right now, we are seven days away from thousands of American workers having to walk off the job because Congress hasn't passed a transportation bill. We are eight days away from nearly seven and a half million students seeing their loan rates double because Congress hasn't acted to stop it," Obama said. "This makes no sense."
For weeks, Obama has ridiculed Republicans for not moving quickly to prevent student loan interest rates from doubling, a stance that Democrats have hoped will boost his support among young voters who broadly backed him in the 2008 election. With college costs and student debt growing steadily, the issue ties directly into concerns about the economy and jobs that polls show dominate voters' worries.
Though some rank-and-file GOP lawmakers have opposed letting the government set the rates, Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney and GOP congressional leaders have backed the one-year extension. The remaining dispute has been over how to pay for it.
Republicans have accused Obama of creating a phony issue and drawing out the battle in an attempt to reap political points. In late May, they proposed several options to pay for the measure, all of which were culled from budget savings Obama himself had proposed in the past, but they said the White House was ignoring them.
"Even though the White House refuses to respond to our bipartisan approach, Senate Democrats are finally working with us, and a solution is within reach ? despite the president's failure to act," said Don Stewart, spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
The talks have involved aides to McConnell and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. Democrats said the White House has been kept abreast of the talks, while Republicans said House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has been kept informed but hasn't participated in the negotiations.
According to Democratic aides, negotiators are approaching a deal to cover the bill's costs by charging companies more to insure pensions and changing rules so companies take fewer tax deductions for their pension contributions. Reid proposed both of those ideas this month.
They said additional money would come from a list of options McConnell has offered, probably one to limit federal subsidies of undergraduates' loans to six years. The government does not begin charging interest on Stafford loans until after students graduate, which can take longer than six years.
"While we're not there, we're well down the road. I think we can get something done," Reid told reporters Thursday. He said McConnell and Boehner "are compromising just as we are and hope we can get something done."
If allowed to double, the higher 6.8 percent rate would apply only to new subsidized Stafford loans for undergraduates approved starting on July 1 and would not affect existing loans.
According to the Education Department, 7.4 million students are expected to get new Stafford loans in the year beginning July 1, with each borrowing an average $4,226. A doubling of interest rates would add about $1,000 to the costs of the average loan, which students typically pay off over 10 or more years.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York said last month that student loan debt grew this year to $904 billion, even as other types of consumer debt were falling.

Expert: Poor plan led to Calif cop-on-cop shooting
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Knowing that one of their officers was having sex with a 17-year-old Explorer, police in the central coast city of Santa Maria hatched a plan to immediately arrest him after he indicated he would rather kill himself than go to jail.
Use-of-force experts are split on whether that decision was the right call. The result was fatal shooting of the officer by a colleague while on duty at a DUI checkpoint.
Although local prosecutors deemed the shooting legally justified this week, it is the subject of a pair of independent investigations that will examine the department's response.
"In order to minimize the potential of serious injury or death, this is the worst plan they could have come up with by confronting him at the scene with the information they had," said William Flynn, a retired lieutenant with the West Covina Police Department. "This simply didn't have to happen," said Flynn, who reviewed an 18-page report about the shooting.
Officer Matt Kline, a five-year veteran, killed Officer Alberto Covarrubias early Jan. 28 as two sergeants tried to wrestle a loaded handgun from him. Covarrubias fired a round before being shot.
Kline was not only a friend of Covarrubias, he had been best man at his wedding weeks earlier.
The shooting rocked Santa Maria, a city of 100,000 in an agricultural region about 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
Covarrubias, part of a 112-officer force, was under investigation for having sex with a teenage girl who was part of the police Explorer program. Police used a ruse by having the girl call Covarrubias and tell him she might be pregnant with his child. Covarrubias asked the girl to deny they had sex and said he would kill himself before facing the prospect of going to jail.
"Based on the information at hand, it was decided it was necessary to act immediately and arrest the officer," the Santa Barbara County district attorney's office said in the report.
One factor made the situation even more tenuous: Covarrubias was aware police were investigating an undisclosed incident involving an Explorer and suspected the probe was focused on him and the teenage girl.
"If I get caught I'm done," Covarrubias texted the girl the night before the shooting, according to the report. He added, "Let's not worry."
Flynn said instead of formulating a plan to isolate Covarrubias, Santa Maria police tried to arrest him on duty at the DUI checkpoint where there were other armed officers unaware of what was going on. Flynn said police had various options at their disposal, including waiting until Covarrubias had returned to the station.
"In this situation they needed to deescalate it, but in my opinion they did nothing but escalate it," he said. "They are lucky no other officers were injured."
Gregory D. Lee, a criminal justice consultant and retired supervisory special agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration, said because Covarrubias saw his life crumbling, police had to make the arrest sooner than later.
"They thought it was time-critical," Lee said. "You don't know how people are going to react to certain situations. I think they used their best judgment at the time."
City Manager Rick Haydon said there are two parallel independent investigations that will look at how police handled the incident. One is being handled by two retired law enforcement officers as part of an internal affairs investigation. The other will be conducted by the Office of Independent Review, a Los Angeles County law enforcement watchdog agency.
Haydon declined to comment further about the prosecutor's report on the shooting, only to say it was comprehensive and "very detailed."
Kline remains on paid administrative leave.
Covarrubias's family has filed a claim, a precursor to a lawsuit, against the city of Santa Maria. The family's attorney, Gil Alvandi, said his office is conducting its own investigation and he disagrees that the fatal shooting was justified.
"We feel that the investigation was conducted with a predetermined outcome clearing the city and its officials of any wrongdoing," Alvandi said. "The attempt to protect officials at the highest levels of the police department is blatant and unacceptable."
Alvandi pointed out there were roughly a dozen instances where police brass showed concern with the plan to arrest Covarrubias but it went ahead anyway in a "reckless and haphazard manner."
One of the sergeants who tried to get the gun away from Covarrubias, who happened to be his cousin, questioned before the shooting why they had to make the arrest that night. A lieutenant responded that Covarrubias may be suicidal and wasn't going to be taken alive, according to the report.
"This is about the worst case scenario you can come up with," Lee said. "It's 'Peyton Place.' It's a mess."
