BOSTONA novel compound has become the first targeted therapy to benefit patients with the most common genetic subtype of lung cancer, an international clinical trial led by scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and other institutions will report at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) June 1-5 in Chicago.

Pasi A. Jnne, MD, PhD, scientific co-director of Dana-Farber's Belfer Institute for Applied Cancer Science, will present the findings from the randomized phase II study (abstract 7503) on Monday, June 4, 3 p.m. CT, E Hall D2, McCormick Place.

The study involved 87 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients whose tumors carry a mutation in the gene KRAS. Such tumors account for about 20 percent of NSCLC cases, but no targeted therapy has proved effective against them in previous clinical research. The drug under investigation, selumetinib, doesn't attack KRAS directly, but interferes with one of its molecular henchmen, a protein called MEK.

Participants in the study all had advanced stages of the disease. They received the standard chemotherapy agent docetaxel in combination with either selumetinib or a placebo.

By many measures the rate and duration of response to treatment, change in tumor size, and proportion of patients alive and showing no signs of advancing disease -- the group receiving selumetinib did significantly better than the other group. Most clinically significant were the improved rate of response to treatment (37 percent compared to 0 percent in the placebo arm) and prolonged progression-free survival (5.3 months compared to 2.1 months in the placebo arm). Although patients in the selumetinib group survived longer, on average, than those in the placebo group 9.4 months compared to 5.2 months the improvement was not considered statistically significant.

"This clinical trial demonstrates that a combination of chemotherapy and selumetinib is significantly better than chemotherapy alone for this group of patients better in terms of tumor response to therapy and in terms of survival times prior to advance of the disease," says Jnne. "It suggests that for the first time we may have an effective treatment for KRAS-mutant lung cancer, which is the largest single subtype of the disease. These impressive clinical findings not only have implications for the treatment of lung cancer but all cancers that harbor KRAS mutations, including pancreatic and colorectal cancer."

Some side effects, such as neutropenia (a white blood cell deficiency), loss of strength, acne, and respiratory problems were more common in the selumetinib group than the other, but the rate of patients dropping out of the study because of severe side effects was similar for both groups.

Robot on your shoulder keeps a friend (or parent) close

55 min.

Ever feel like you have a little person on your shoulder keeping track of your every move, providing encouragement to keep up the good work or stop you from doing something bad?

That little person may soon be more than just your conscience; it could be a robot that provides real-time interaction between you and a remote friend (or parent) as you do what you do.

Imagine going on a trip, for example, and bringing along your best friend who?s stuck at home, or sticking a robot on your child?s shoulder to remotely chaperone a Friday night out.

The robot, known as the miniature humanoid, or MH-2, is under development at Yamagata University in Japan. It has head and body moves like a person. It even breathes like one.

The idea is that a person stands in front a TV screen or an immersive display with a sensor such as a Kinect. This person sees whatever the person with the robot sees.

?Meanwhile, the robot on your shoulder acts like an avatar, duplicating the speech and gestures of your friend right there for you to interact with directly,? IEEE reports in its Automation blog.?

For now, the robot is controlled by servos in a 22 pound backpack, which would make bringing along a friend for every moment of a trip quite cumbersome, as well as awkwardly geeky.

But when the telepresence technology catches up with the imagination as illustrated in the video clip below, this could serve to keep friends and family close when they physically far apart.

Speaking vs Writing ? ms. weir's musings

29 May

One thing I?ve really been struggling with lately, is the idea of assessing some students who are strong speakers, but weak writers. I know in our curriculum, oral communication and writing both are worth 25% of the student?s overall grade, but it really brings down the mark of a student if they are strong in one area, but weak in the other.

I?m wondering if our grading system needs an overhaul? With the advent of technologies like Dragon Dictation and the voice to text application on the New iPad, are we really going to need to know how to physically hand write or type? I?m sure some people will still prefer these methods, but the technology is already here so that those skills are becoming antiquated. I mean, my toddler won?t really need to know how to physically write since we already have verbal means for her to communicate and have it be turned to text.

So it leaves me wondering. Are we giving these students grades lower than they deserve because they can?t express their ideas well in a written format? Do we need to revisit the curriculum standards?

As a disclaimer, this message is not meant to suggest that writing is becoming antiquated. The ability to coherently express one?s ideas is always an important skill. I?m more so suggesting that the physical actions of hand writing and typing, in my opinion, will become antiquated skills at some point in the future.

Insight: Israel gas finds launch navy into troubled waters

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - When Israeli economists contemplate their country's untapped natural gas finds far out in the Mediterranean, they dream of energy independence and lucrative export deals.

Those charged with Israel's defense, however, worry that the navy - small and long a middling priority in budgets - may be hard put to protect the multinational drilling platforms and rigs out at sea.

"We will do our best, but without a major boost to our capabilities, our best will not be enough," a senior military planner said in one of a series of Reuters interviews with Israeli decision-makers on the subject.

That all spoke on condition of anonymity indicates concern that such doubts over security might scare off investors and, perhaps, even encourage sea-borne attacks by Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese guerrilla movement hostile to Israel and to its exploration of gas fields also claimed by Beirut.

There are internal political considerations, too. With Middle East instability spiraling, Israel's Finance Ministry is poring over an unwieldy plan for fiscal cuts combined with new spending on national security. The navy is lobbying for cash but is loath to challenge Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu openly.

Maps and other dry facts speak amply.

The huge gas fields centered 130 km (80 miles) from the port of Haifa in northern Israel, along with Yam Thetis, the existing gas-production rig just off Ashkelon in the south, make for a body of water covering 23,000 square km (9,000 square miles) - more than Israel's territory on land.

Guerrilla raids from the north appear the main threat, with Palestinian Hamas militants penned in Gaza to the south and rumbling discontent from the Lebanese government over Israel's drawing of a maritime border unlikely to take a military turn.

Providing rapid response in an emergency would strain the Israeli fleet of three corvettes - which have a crew of about 70 and can carry helicopters - 10 other missile boats and fast patrol vessels, and three diesel submarines, not least given their existing roles of enforcing the Gaza Strip blockade and the occasional foray through the Suez Canal to the Red Sea.

"You would need to have at least two missile boats in the vicinity of the rigs at all time," said a senior officer.

Another declined to give a specific number, saying only the navy required "several" new vessels to meet future missions.

TALL ORDER

That would mean major expansion of the fleet - a tall order, not least as Israel bought another submarine for $335 million in March.

Visiting Israeli joint defense headquarters in Tel Aviv reveals the navy's junior status, its cramped command centre overshadowed by the marbled tower of the well-funded air force.

The navy also faces skepticism from an Israeli cabinet stiff with former army generals and a finance minister, Yuval Steinitz, who is a civilian expert on maritime security.

In the spirit of what Israelis mordantly call their "ad-hocracy", an unwillingness to spend on things that seem less pressing, the government may not agree with naval commanders about the urgency of protecting gas fields which are years away from being fully exploited and operational.

One of the handful of gas development projects under way, Tamar, has finished a well 70 km (45 miles) from Haifa. An underwater pipeline will run from there to a production rig that will be erected next to Yam Thetis, 25 km (15 miles) from Israel's southern coast, by July 2013.

Another project, Leviathan, is 130 km (80 miles) off Haifa - a remoteness from shore that would itself appear to provide protection from guerrilla raids - and is not expected to produce gas before 2017. A number of firms hope to find undersea oil reserves, as well as the gas.

Robin Mills, head of consulting at Manaar Energy in Dubai, predicted an eventual increase in such activity off Israel and Cyprus, with several new exploration wells supported by supply ships and pipe-laying vessels.

"It won't be like the North Sea, but not a negligible presence either," Mills said. "I wouldn't say the security discussion is premature."

Asked about prospects for protecting the gas fields, a senior Finance Ministry official said only: "This is one among the Israel Defence Forces' various missions. We are confident that the IDF will successfully rise to it."

MISSILES, DIVERS, DRONES

Like its foreign counterparts, Israel's navy prides itself on a spit-and-polish proficiency, especially in carrying out missions of strategic importance. The officers who spoke to Reuters chafed at the idea that, in a fix, they might be forced to call on NATO powers which sail the Mediterranean, such as the United States.

The Israeli navy has fended off a variety of threats over the decades, including at long range. Last year it captured anti-ship missiles which Israel said were destined for Palestinian guerrillas in the Gaza Strip. From there, the weapons could potentially have been used to blow up Yam Thetis.

Citing intelligence assessments, the navy fears Hezbollah guerrillas in boats could fire similar missiles against Israeli targets in the northern gas fields. Other scenarios include remote-controlled flying bombs crashing into rigs, or miniature submarines striking from below. A separate possibility is of gunmen approaching the platforms in civilian vessels or with divers' gear, then storming aboard to kill or capture the crews.

"We designated these kinds of attack as having a 'reasonable likelihood' of occurring," one Israeli officer said.

Anthony Skinner, Middle East analyst at London political risk consultancy Maplecroft, voiced doubt about the imminence of any such incident. He argued Hezbollah has a role as a reserve reprisal arm of its patron Iran, should the latter's controversial nuclear facilities be bombed by the Israelis.

"Were Hezbollah to target gas platform and production rigs, such an attack would likely provoke a robust response from Israeli forces, which may in turn precipitate a broader conflict. One of Iran's key cards against Israel would be removed from the table," Skinner said.

But merely menacing the energy assets could have value in the eyes of Hezbollah and its allies: "It is altogether conceivable that Hezbollah will seek to deter or frustrate Israeli extraction. Iran too does not want Israel to be able to exploit massive oil and gas wealth in the Mediterranean," Skinner said.

MUTUAL DETERRENCE?

Though outgunned by Israel, Hezbollah guerrillas fought its army to a standstill in a border war in 2006 and have since maintained a tense standoff while making clear they are honing their military capabilities for any new conflict.

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the Hezbollah leader, indicated in a speech last July that any attack on Israeli offshore gas facilities would be in retaliation for an attack on Lebanon.

Israel's navy says that in addition to enhancing its own fleet it expects stepped-up air force patrols of the gas fields and espionage further abroad.

"If there is a Hezbollah guy training in South America to attack a gas platform, we want to know about it," an Israeli officer said, speaking hypothetically.

There is hope for stop-gap measures such as unmanned, machinegun-equipped naval patrol boats that can travel long distances and remotely challenge suspect vessels. Navy officers also hint at the development of electronic counter-measures that would allow gas rigs to block incoming guided missiles.

"The IDF knows how to provide a response for all of Israel's military needs," said Ohad Marani, a former Finance Ministry director-general and now CEO of ILD Energy, which plans to begin drilling the first of two new offshore wells in June.

Texas-based Noble Energy, the main foreign company developing the gas fields with Israel and its maritime neighbor Cyprus, declined to discuss security measures for the platforms.

One of the Israeli officers said the rigs had private guards who coordinate closely with the navy. But they have not yet held sufficient joint emergency drills, the officer said, citing reluctance to disrupt work that costs around $1 million a day.

"Noble was the only company crazy enough to work with us," the officer said. "We don't want to be inconsiderate."

That leaves the hope that Hezbollah will shrink from the geographical, and geopolitical, hurdles of strikes at sea.

"The targets are so distant, and if they miss, then they hit the water and get no effect whatsoever," an Israeli officer said, channeling Hezbollah thinking. "And if they do get the target, then they hurt Americans and Filipino crewmen rather than just Jews. So maybe they'll think it's not worth it."

Iran, other Mideast states hit by computer virus

(AP) ? Iran and other Middle East countries have been hit with a cunning computer virus that can eavesdrop on computer users and their co-workers and filch information from nearby cellphones, cybersecurity experts said Tuesday. And suspicion immediately fell on Israel as the culprit.

The Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab ZAO said the "Flame" virus is unprecedented in size and complexity, with researcher Roel Schouwenberg marveling at its versatility.

"It can be used to spy on everything that a user is doing," he said.

Computers in Iran appear to have been particularly affected, and Kaspersky's conclusion that the virus was crafted at the behest of a national government fueled speculation it could be part of an Israeli-backed campaign of electronic sabotage against the Jewish state's archenemy.

The virus can activate a computer's audio systems to listen in on Skype calls or office chatter. It can also take screenshots, log keystrokes and ? in one of its more novel functions? steal data from Bluetooth-enabled cellphones.

Schouwenberg said there is evidence to suggest that the people behind Flame also helped craft Stuxnet, a virus that is believed to have attacked nuclear centrifuges in Iran in 2010. Many suspect Stuxnet was the work of Israeli intelligence.

Tehran has not said whether it lost any data to Flame, but a unit of the Iranian communications and information technology ministry said it has produced an anti-virus capable of identifying and removing Flame from its computers.

Israel's vice premier did little to deflect suspicion about the country's possible involvement in the attack.

"Whoever sees the Iranian threat as a significant threat is likely to take various steps, including these, to hobble it," Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio when asked about Flame. "Israel is blessed with high technology, and we boast tools that open all sorts of opportunities for us."

Researchers not involved in Flame's discovery were more skeptical of its sophistication than Kaspersky, with Richard Bejtlich of Virginia-based Mandiant saying the virus appeared similar to spyware used by the German government to monitor criminal suspects.

"There have been tool like this employed by high-end teams for many years," he said.

Colorado-based Webroot said the virus wasn't as complex or as stealthy as Stuxnet and was "a relatively easy threat to identify."

Flame is unusually large. Malicious programs collected by the British security firm Sophos averaged about 340 kilobytes in 2010, the same year that Kaspersky believes Flame first started spreading. Flame is 20 megabytes ? nearly 60 times that figure.

Alan Woodward, a professor of computing at the University of Surrey in England, said functions can be added or subtracted to the virus depending on what kind of espionage is desired, not unlike the way apps can be downloaded to a smartphone.

He was particularly struck by Flame's ability to turn an infected computer into a kind of "industrial vacuum cleaner," copying data from vulnerable cellphones or other Bluetooth wireless devices left near it.

"I don't believe I've seen it before," he said.

Udi Mokady, chief executive of Cyber-Ark, an Israeli developer of information security, said he believes four countries, in no particular order, have the know-how to develop so sophisticated a weapon: Israel, the U.S., China and Russia.

"It was 20 times more sophisticated than Stuxnet," with thousands of lines of code that took a large team, ample funding and months, if not years, to develop, he said. "It's a live program that communicates back to its master. It asks, 'Where should I go? What should I do now?' It's really almost like a science fiction movie."

It's not clear exactly what the virus was targeting. Kaspersky said it detected the program in hundreds of computers, mainly in Iran but also in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

The company would not give details on the victims except to say that they "range from individuals to certain state-related organizations or educational institutions."

Schouwenberg said stolen data was being sent to some 80 different servers, something that would give the virus' controllers time to adjust their tactics if they were discovered.

As for Flame's purpose, "maybe it's just espionage," he said. "Maybe it's also sabotage."

Lady Gaga & the FLSA: A bad romance - Business Management Daily

The former personal assistant to Lady Gaga was ?figuratively, if not literally, always at (Gaga?s) side? and ?on duty during all hours of each 24-hour day with no entitlement to breaks ? or, at times, even sleep.? The assistant was even responsible for ?ensuring the promptness of a towel following a shower.?

The problem, as the assistant?s lawsuit claims, is that Lady Gaga failed to pay her overtime. Now, she says, she?s owed hundreds of thousands of dollars.? ?

The lesson: Paying someone a salary doesn?t automatically make them exempt from the FLSA and overtime laws. Look at the duties and compare them to our Exempt vs. Nonexempt Checklist.

Australia has put on a defiant stand against complaints by Ukraine and Honduras made to the World Trade Organization over its decision to enforce plain cigarette packaging and said that it will vigorously defend itself.

The action was launched by Ukraine at the WTO in March and Honduras joined the following month, according to the global trade arbiter.

"We'll be vigorously defending any WTO actions -- our steps aren't anti-trade, they're anti-cancer," a spokeswoman for Attorney-General Nicola Roxon told AFP.

While Honduras is a tobacco producer, the motives for opposition by Ukraine -- a nation of heavy smokers with a large tobacco industry but no direct trade with Australia -- were unclear.

If the dispute cannot be resolved through consultation Ukraine and Honduras can request formal adjudication through a WTO panel, which could force Canberra to scrap the legislation.

The cigarettes packaging plan is also currently subject to a challenge by several tobacco giants in Australia's High Court. Hearings concluded last month but a ruling is yet to be delivered.

The government has said it is confident it will see off the challenge to the law, which will see all cigarettes sold in the same drab olive-green packets with graphic health warnings from December 1.

Australia is the first country to mandate plain packaging, but the ground-breaking move is being closely watched by other countries considering similar approaches, including Britain and Canada.

Neighbouring New Zealand last month announced it had agreed "in principle" to go ahead with laws mandating similar plain packaging, as part of a wider strategy to stamp out smoking in the country by 2025.

Australia estimates it has 15,000 deaths each year from tobacco-related illnesses.

Travel Agencies In Vietnam

Visiting Vietnam with a travel agency is a good idea. A travel professional can give you a valuable advice on what cities to visit, what monuments to see, what travel guides are the best to accompany you.

Vietnam is considered one of the most popular destinations in the south-east of Asia. Hanoi, the capital of the country, is an ancient city, the political, economic and cultural center. The city began its rapid development in the 11th century, when the Emperor Wan Li Kong, moved his capital to the citadel of Thang-Long. Today it is one of the most interesting cities in Asia, with its wide avenues and European-style skyscrapers, numerous lakes, parks and fountains interspersed with hundreds of colonial houses and pagodas.

Downtown areas of the city have been turned into a huge shopping district. The capital is literally full of historical landmarks, including the Temple of the White Horse, the Flag Tower, the largest lake in the capital, Ho Tay, with many buildings of the era of emperors on its shores. The Temple of the Rising Sun and The Forbidden City are perhaps the two most romantic places adored by tourists. The remains of the ancient defense system of the capital, and the complex of monuments of An-Duong Vuong will please the admirers of historical sights. The Cathedral of St. Joseph, Kwan-Su Pagoda, as well as numerous bridges are some of other popular places.

The monuments of later periods include the Temple of Literature, the Presidential Palace, the Mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, and a network of tunnels used during the Vietnam War as a shelter from air raids. Very original and numerous are the museums of Hanoi, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, the Ethnographic Museum, the Museum of Folk Architecture, and the Army Museum. It is worth visiting the Municipal Puppet Theater on Lake Hoan-Kem and the Hanoi Municipal Theatre. In January, one can witness the famous festival of spring flowers.

Halong Bay is famous as 'the place where the dragon descended into the sea'. Perhaps it is the most important and beautiful sight of the country listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is an amazing complex of 3,000 tiny rocky islands that are picturesquely scattered in the sea and surrounded by tiny beaches and quaint caves and grottoes. Of special interest is Vandong, an ancient trading port in South-East Asia, as well as numerous historical sites scattered throughout the bay.

Hue is the capital of the last emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty. It is one of the cultural, religious and educational centers in Vietnam, as well as one of the most interesting cities in the country. Here are restored imperial palaces, the walls of the citadel Kinh Thanh, the palace of Thai Hoa, the Museum of Emperor Bao-Tung Wat Ku with a small military museum. Da Nang lies in the heart of the country, in a picturesque setting on the rugged coastline. It is a major industrial and commercial center, one of the main ports of the country.

Nha Trang is a beautiful seaside resort, situated almost in the center of the country, in the province of Khanh Hoa. Despite the proximity of large industrial enterprises, Nha Trang is one of the best places in the country. The symbol of the city is a huge statue of Buddha.

Ho Chi Minh City is one of the largest cities of Indochina and a significant trading port. During its development, it experienced many difficult years, as reflected in the architecture and numerous monuments of this great city. This is a noisy, bustling and ever-dynamic center of the south, the economic capital and cultural center of Vietnam. Its streets are a myriad of markets, shops, cafes and hawkers selling their wares on the sidewalk.

Syria UN observers visit 'massacre' town

UN observers rushed on Saturday to a town in central Syria where scores of civilians were reportedly massacred, including 25 children, as the opposition renewed calls for air strikes on regime forces.

The shelling of the town of Houla by regime forces, which began at around midday on Friday and continued until dawn on Saturday, killed more than 90 people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"A team of UN observers arrived in the village of Taldau (outside) Houla, to document the crimes committed in the past 24 hours, in violation of the ceasefire," the rights watchdog said, adding that explosions and gunfire could be heard.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius condemned the massacre and said he was "making immediate arrangements for a Friends of Syria group meeting in Paris."

He spoke after the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) again called for Friends of Syria nations to launch air strikes against President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

Turkey-based General Mustafa Ahmed al-Sheikh, head of the FSA's military council, urged "an appropriate stance after the heinous crime committed by Assad's assassin regime in the Houla region."

"We are calling urgently on the Friends of Syria to create a military alliance, outside of the UN Security Council, to carry out targeted strikes against Assad's gangs and the symbols of his regime," he said.

Amateur videos posted on YouTube showed horrifying images of children lying dead on a floor. Some corpses were badly mangled, with at least one child's head partly blown away.

The Britain-based Observatory accused the international community of being "complicit" in the killing and standing "silent in the face of the massacres committed by the Syrian regime."

Earlier, opposition Syrian National Council spokeswoman Basma Kodmani said "more than 110 people were killed (half of whom are children) by the Syrian regime's forces" in Houla.

"Some of the victims were hit by heavy artillery while others, entire families, were massacred."

"The Syrian National Council urges the UN Security Council to call for an emergency meeting to examine the situation in Houla and to determine the responsibility of the United Nations in face of such mass killings, expulsions and forced migration from entire neighbourhoods," she added.

State news agency SANA blamed "armed terrorist groups" for the killings, adding that "clashes led to the killing of several terrorists and the martyrdom of several members of the special forces."

SANA also reported the arrival of members of the UN team of military observers in Houla.

Regime forces pounded rebel positions elsewhere in Homs province on Saturday, according to the Observatory, which reported nine people killed in violence across Syria, including four civilians.

"A civilian was killed during the shelling of Qusayr," scene of frequent clashes between regime troops and rebel fighters, it said.

"In the city of Homs, blasts were heard this morning as well as heavy machinegun fire in the Jobar district," the monitoring group added.

Two civilians were killed by shelling in northwestern Idlib province, and a young activist was killed and another 10 people were wounded when regime forces shot at demonstrators in Saraqeb, also in Idlib, according to the same source.

In southern Daraa, regime forces raided Qarfa village and detained scores of residents, while five regular soldiers were ambushed and killed in the same region, the Observatory added.

Protests took place on Saturday against the reported massacre in Houla, anti-regime activists said.

In Kfarnabel, in the northwestern province of Idlib, scores of men and women took to the streets to honour the dead, chanting: "We sacrifice our soul and life for you, O people of Houla," according to an amateur video on YouTube.

Protesters were also angry with the international community.

One demonstrator held up a sign reading: "(Kofi) Annan is single-handedly responsible for the Houla massacre," blaming the special UN-Arab League envoy for continued violence.

Annan brokered a six-point peace plan which included a ceasefire that went into effect on April 12 but has since been breeched daily.

He is to travel to Syria "soon" as he continues efforts to find a peaceful solution to the crisis, his spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said. Diplomats in Geneva said the former UN chief would visit Damascus early next week.

France's foreign minister condemned "the atrocities committed daily by Bashar al-Assad on his own people. With these new crimes his murderous regime plunges Syria further into horror and threatens regional stability."

Fabius said the UN observers should complete their deployment in line with Annan's peace plan.

Saying he would speak to Annan on Sunday, Fabius added: "In the face of horror, the international community must mobilise still further to stop the martyrdom of the Syrian people."

More than 12,600 people have been killed in Syria in the revolt against Assad's rule, including nearly 1,500 since the UN-backed truce was to come into effect, according to Observatory figures.

Drug-Free Workplace | Wrinkle Jump Business

Safety at work means that there is no place for drugs. However, addiction is a serious problem in the productivity of American business. It is estimated that hundreds of billions of dollars per year lost due to insurance claims, sick leave, accidents and theft in connection with the use of drugs.

One way to reduce the harm caused by drug use is to implement the system of drug testing. In no place is more important to drug testing in the construction industry. This is a security service that can significantly reduce the losses associated with the drug, as it helps to avoid hiring those who are involved in drug use.

A study at Cornell in 2000 showed that construction companies have employees and applicants with a 51% reduction of accidents within 2 years from the drug testing program. Reduction of accidents resulting in substantial savings in workers? compensation premiums.

Not only are there health benefits and financial institutions but to implement drug testing programs can be done to better working conditions for employees. Employers and workers share the same goal. In particular, both sides want to do business successfully. For this is a productive worker. If the company decides not to test for drugs may be more opportunity to hire someone who can not find work because of substance abuse.

Why does a drug test is a good idea?

  • Drug users are three times more likely to call the hospital.
  • Even if the drugs are not often, are four times more likely to lead to accidents.

What are the different types of drug screening?

  • Random drug testing
  • Suspected drug tests
  • Annual test for drugs
  • After the drug test

What are the different types of drug tests are available?

  • Urine is a staple because of its ease of use and rapid results
  • Saliva
  • Hair more accurate, but the samples must be sent to the laboratory

With the help of drug testing, employers are likely to play a productive team. The benefits of a productive workforce is much higher than the cost of drug testing. The safety and productivity can be achieved to create an environment where people want to work. Try to add services to drug testing for your safety. So enjoy a high level of safety, productivity and morale in favor of employers and workers.

Bosnia couple arrested for allegedly abusing girl

(AP) ? A couple who allegedly beat a young woman while keeping her locked up for years have been arrested in Bosnia, an official said Sunday.

The 19-year-old girl was rescued after villagers tipped off authorities that she was being abused, the spokesman for the prosecutor's office in Tuzla, Admir Arnautovic, told The Associated Press. He said Milenko Marinkovic, 52, and his wife Slavojka, 45, were detained on suspicion of illegal imprisonment in a particularly cruel way.

The teenager, who was not named by authorities, was rescued and the couple detained on May 17th, but officials delayed announcing that while making sure the victim was is safe and questioning witnesses. Arnautovic said the teen was "disoriented" when police found her and had clearly visible injuries.

"She now feels much better," the spokesman said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

Villagers in Karavlasi village told media the couple were treating the girl like a slave, forcing her to sleep with pigs and to pull a horse cart while being whipped.

Media reported the girl is the daughter of Marinkovic's first wife, a German who still lives in the village and who has denied the accusations against the couple.

Villagers interviewed by local TV stations said they no longer could watch what was being done to the girl and called the police.

Yucca Mountain critic picked to head nuclear panel

WASHINGTON ? Stirring the lingering debate over storing nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, President Obama tapped Yucca critic Allison Macfarlane as the new chairwoman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The nomination of Macfarlane, an associate professor at George Mason University in Virginia who has written extensively on Yucca Mountain, is sure to be a lightning rod in the Senate, setting up a confirmation showdown. Republicans in Congress continue to lead the fight against Obama's decision to halt development of the nation's nuclear dump 90 miles north of Las Vegas.

If confirmed, Macfarlane would replace embattled Chairman Gregory Jaczko, who announced this week he would step down after a congressional investigation into claims that he had an overbearing management style.

Jaczko was among the panel's chief opponents of Yucca Mountain, and in choosing Macfarlane, who has raised scientific concerns about the viability of storing waste in Nevada, the White House gave nod to the continued importance of the issue for the crucial campaign swing state of Nevada ? and its senior senator, Majority Leader Harry Reid.

"I am confident that like her predecessor, Dr. Allison Macfarlane will make preserving the safety and security of American citizens her top priority as chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission," Reid said in a statement.

Jaczko had previously been a top aide to Reid in fighting the waste repository.

A confirmation stalemate in the Senate could threaten the function of the five-member panel that oversees nuclear energy development, as Republicans have been pressing to grant Commissioner Kristine Svinicki another term when hers expires June 30.

Svinicki, a nuclear engineer, had previously worked as a Senate Armed Services Committee staff member for Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the committee's top Republican, who at one point had been a strong supporter of Yucca Mountain.

Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the GOP leader, said this week that Svinicki deserved a "speedy re-confirmation."

But on Thursday, Reid said he had "grave concerns" over Svinicki's record, and suggested moving the two nominations together ? a potential compromise ? "to ensure that we have a fully functioning NRC."

Macfarlane, a geologist, has been an associate professor of environmental science at the university since 2006. She was picked for a federal commission that studied alternatives for nuclear waste storage and previously worked as a research associate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The Union of Concerned Scientists, a nuclear watchdog group, welcomed Macfarlane's nomination, and said it expected she would advocate for enhancing nuclear power safety and security.

NJ Military Couple Weds With Help From Weddings For Heroes ...

On May 25th, Danielle and Steven Miller had the wedding reception they dreamed about at the Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank, NJ. Wedding professionals from throughout New Jersey volunteered their time, expertise, products and services through Weddings For Heroes, a new charitable organization recently founded to assist Military couples with weddings

Below is the couple?s story, as written by the bride, Danielle, from Bellmawr, NJ:

Steven and Danielle Miller at the Weddings For Heroes launch event in Red Bank

Steven and Danielle Miller at the Weddings For Heroes launch event in Red Bank

My name is Danielle Miller and this is our story. My ?husband Steven Miller has been active in the Military with the Army Reserves? since he was 17. He LOVES the Army and would be on active duty right now if?he could. He loves what he does so much that eight days after he graduated?high school he went to his first day of boot camp. He has had two tours over?seas. His first tour was in Kuwait and his most recent tour was in Iraq.? ?Steven and I have been together for over five years now. We have two?beautiful children. Colin, our son, is 3 1/2 and Aubrey, our daughter, is 5? months old. In our relationship we have never done anything by the books. We ?never did anything traditionally. We moved into an apartment together then ?became pregnant with our son. Before Steven?s last tour in Iraq we finally ?moved out of our one bedroom apartment into our brand new house, which we ?bought and we were no longer ?renters.? Steve was only able to stay in our? first house for thirteen days until he was deployed. Our son was only a ?little over one when he left. It was one of the hardest things we have gone ?through. With Steve leaving, our new house, and our one year old energetic ?little boy, it was a lot of new responsibilities that I was not used to doing ?alone. Being away from your spouse for such a long period of time is very ?hard. Any kind of communication with Steve was difficult. I had to always ?wait for his calls and emails. I would have given anything to be able to? pick up the phone and call him. One of the hardest things for both Steve and ?I was explaining to our son were daddy was. Even though he was little, he ?still knew that his daddy wasn?t home and he wasn?t where he was supposed to ?be, with Colin and I. We had to wait a little over seven months to see Steve ?for the first time since his deployment. SEVEN MONTHS!!! And that was just ?for his R&R. Having to let him go again was so hard. No family should ever? have to go through that.

The Millers, with son Colin at Halloween

When Steve finally came home for good it was great having our little family ?back together. I?ll never forget the look on our son?s face when he finally? saw his daddy! He spent only a few weeks home with us before taking a job? three hours from home to provide for his family. Steve is gone Monday ?morning and returns home Saturday morning since his civilian job does not? pay as much as the army paid ? he is constantly working when and where he? can. His work ethic is a quality I admire in him.

One month after he returned home, we became pregnant with our daughter. We ?couldn?t be happier about expanding our family and giving Colin a little sister. The day before Christmas Eve 2010 Steve asked me? to marry him in front of my entire family. OH MY GOSH was I ever excited!! I ?was very impressed with him, his family, and my family for keeping it a? secret for a month. Steve is not the best at keeping surprises and neither ?are our families.

Times were getting a little harder with our bills. All of the work Steve ?does is outside and his working is totally dependent on the weather. This? does not make for good working conditions in the winter. Also with this? economy, Steve?s work was very slow. At this point I?m about 4-5 months? pregnant, paying $263 a month for my health insurance and now my insurance? company is telling me after the new year I have to go on the ?pregnancy ?plan? insurance, which is $500.00 a month!! That?s just for me!! With bills? slowly getting tighter and now this, Steve and I decided that we would just? get married by the Justice of Peace and then have a wedding in the future.? So that?s what we did. On January 15th, 2011 we were officially husband and? wife. Yay!! Now that we are married I can go on his Military insurance plan.? That definitely helped us save money.

Steve and baby Aubrey, "Daddy's Little Girl"

Steve and baby Aubrey, ?Daddy?s Little Girl?

Unfortunately with his job being so slow, Steve didn?t have work for 5-6? weeks straight. But fortunately my parents put aside some money for me for ?when we would get married. As much as we didn?t want to, we had to use a lot? of what they gave us to pay our bills. Now with two kids, I do the best I ?can to help bring in income. I?m by myself with our children every day.? Besides being mommy I do hair at home and recently started teaching Zumba. I? have been back and forth with working. I stopped a month before Colin was? born and didn?t return until Steve was deployed in Iraq. Colin was born with ?a cleft lip and palate. He has already had four surgeries at his young age.? His first surgery he was only 13 days old. Because of his disability it was?better for me to stay home with him. With Steve?s job, he?s out of town all? week and returns home every Saturday morning to be with us. Then heads back ?to Long Island Monday morning around 3 in the morning to be at work by 7.? One weekend out of the month he has drill for the Army Reserves. So really ?we only see each other 4-6 days a month. He is working very hard to find a ?job that will bring him home every night. The Military can only help so?much. He went to them for help and he did everything they told him, but? still with this market and economy, finding a job is not easy for anyone. The? bills need to be paid, so he does what makes the money.

I?m telling you our story because Steve is the love of my ?life. In just the five years we have been together we have experienced more ?than most couples experience in twenty years. Family is Steve?s life. Ever ?since I first met him he loves being around his family and always puts us ?first. Weddings are so much fun because everyone?s together and celebrating? your love. This wedding would mean so much to us. We aren?t able to do much ?together for ourselves. I know with your help it could actually happen ?instead of hoping that one day we finally have our wedding. With everything ?we have been through together this wedding would be a day for us to just put? all our energy and love into each other instead of focusing on all the ?distractions of everyday life. ? ?Thank you for your time and thank you for giving military families an ?amazing chance for a beautiful wedding. I hope that with your help Steven ?and I are able to experience our dream wedding.

Exotic Animal Park Allows Kids to Play with Tigers

Animal Welfare, Petitions ? By Kristin Harkness on May 25, 2012 2:00 am

Target: David Sacks, spokesman for the United States Department of Agriculture

Goal: Shut down GW Exotic Animal Park, which allows visitors to come in contact with exotic cats, and has multiple animal welfare violations.

A 2011 undercover investigation by the Humane Society of the United States into an exotic animal park in Oklahoma revealed children coming in contact with exotic cats and several instances of biting and scratching. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has already conducted four investigations of the park and its owner for violations of the Animal Welfare Act. GW Exotic Animal Park must be shut down to protect the welfare of the animals, as well as the safety of the public.

The investigation, conducted in the summer and fall of 2011, revealed unwarranted breeding, tiger deaths and dangerous situations involving paying customers and their children. With around 200 tigers and other big cats, GW Exotics could have more exotic animals than any roadside zoo in the nation.

At least five tigers died during the course of the investigation. The USDA is currently investigating the death of 23 tigers at the Oklahoma park in 2009 and 2010. In 2006, Joe Schreibvogel, owner of the park, was fined $25,000 and had his exhibitor?s license suspended for two weeks for welfare-related issues. It is clear that he is not willing or able to comply with basic welfare standards.

After the tragedy in Zanesville, Ohio that resulted in the death of 35 big cats, we cannot risk another incident. Tigers are wild animals that are not fit to be held in private captivity. Urge the USDA to shut down GW Exotics immediately.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Sacks,

The Humane Society of the United States recently revealed the results of its undercover investigation into GW Exotic Animal Park. At least five tigers died during the investigation, and the investigator found unwarranted breeding, as well as dangerous incidents where tigers bit or scratched visitors. This irresponsible operation cannot continue to exist.

You are currently investigating GW Exotics for the death of 23 tigers in 2009 and 2010. This is the fourth investigation the park has faced. Enough is enough.

We cannot risk another tragedy such as the one in Zanesville Ohio. Please protect the welfare of the tigers and the safety of the public by shutting down GW Exotics immediately.

Sincerely,

Your cotton T-shirt could soon charge your phone

13 hrs.

One day, donning a T-shirt could mean you're also sporting a smart device charger. Engineers have successfully transformed cotton into a flexible, highly conductive component, which means it could charge devices.

"In the future, you can imagine our cell phones will be just like a piece of paper you can roll up. But we need to have a flexible energy device to integrate with flexible, stretchable motherboards," said Xiaodong Li, a mechanical engineering professor at the University of South Carolina who led the development with postdoc Lihong Bao. Their article was just published in the journal Advanced Materials ( abstract ).

NEWS: Electronic Tattoo Grafts Gadgets to Skin

Li knows how to be creative with cotton T-shirts. In 2010, he and his colleagues converted one into lightweight body armor by converting the fabric into boron carbide nanowires. So when he began looking for a backbone to make a flexible energy storage device, he turned to a $5 cotton tee from Wal-Mart.

The engineers had to make the cotton highly conductive so they tried several "recipes," Li said. He compared their experiments with trying to replicate a restaurant meal at home without having seen the chef's preparations. First they dipped the cotton in a sodium fluoride solution for an hour, took the wet material and dried it in a preheated oven for three hours. Then they heated it in a hotter furnace for an hour.

By the time it was done, the cotton had changed into activated carbon. Despite being baked, the charred-looking material could still be folded. From there, the engineers coated it with a nano-layer of the conductive metal manganese oxide for the last stage of building their energy storage device.

??Lead researcher Xiaodong Li said his team knew that future body armor would need a flexible power source. And because the scientists work in South Carolina, which used to have a big cotton industry, they thought, 'Why not use a cotton T-shirt as the energy device?'?

??-- Li on his A-Ha! Moment? ? ?

Although others have used cotton in devices, Li said that to the best of his knowledge his research group is the first to activate a cotton T-shirt and build it into a super capacitor. Their device's performance is on par with other carbon-based super capacitors, according to their testing. After 1,000 cycles it had 97.3 percent retention.

"This is a very simple, low-cost process, and it's green," Li said. In addition to starting with a renewable plant-based material, he and his research group estimate that using cotton directly from textile mills could be as much as 10 times cheaper than chemically processing coal or petroleum into activated carbon.

To take his concept to market, the process needs to be scaled up. Li said that for this next phase, he's looking for a potential industry partner. He's also reaching out to state government leaders about using this process to help revive local textile production.

NEWS: Virus-Built Wearable Batteries Could Power Military

Reza Shahbazian-Yassar is an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Michigan Technological University who specializes in the application of nanomaterials for different forms of energy storage. He's familiar with the recent Advanced Materials journal article.

"The novelty of this work is that they have converted the fabric using simple heat treatment processes and a little bit of a chemical process," he said. Shahbazian-Yassar sees an advantage in clothing that contains convenient energy storage. Soldiers on the battlefield could use it in military applications, he added.

"The challenge of course is to improve the amount of energy that these fibers can store," he said. The material also has to be able to keep performing well after regular folding and stretching.

Li, who was recently in Beijing to give a presentation, said he envisions a time when academic conference attendees use roll-up electronic posters that include flexible power sources.

"I like to think about the big picture," he said. "Down the road, we will see such cotton-enabled energy devices in the market. We won't need to rely on oil any more."?

Aweber automates everything for you and there are lots of things you can do with it. Before you even start building your list, explore all of its features and decide how you're going to use it.

2) Offer something free for signing up.

Nobody's going to just jump onto your list because they want the email messages. Offer a free report and make it something broad that anybody who's into your niche would like.

3) Make that freebie viral.

Don't hog it for list members only. Encourage them to share it with others and get it on the web anywhere else you can. The key is that the report has a link at the bottom of each page to your site - and your opt-in list! If they like the report, they'll head there and sign up for more.

4) Spend time on a forum in your niche.

Post helpful comments and participate in discussions. In your signature file, put a link to your opt-in page where it says "Get Your Free Report Here." Just remember to follow forum rules and don't be self-promotional.

5) Getting people to join is all about trust.

Nobody wants to give up their email address to an opt-in form; there are too many spammers out there. Show yourself to be a trustworthy source of high quality information just for them.

6) Really target your audience.

Know exactly who your ideal list member is and focus your efforts on finding them. If you really know who your audience is and speak directly to them, you'll get higher conversions.

7) Don't get hung up on number.

It's better to have a small list that is highly targeted and will buy from you, than to have a huge list of people who never take action.

8) Keep in touch. Don't send out messages every day, but make sure that you keep in touch on a regular basis. Don't send messages only when you want to make them an offer.

9) Everything you offer your list should be valuable and useful to them.

Quality is key. NEVER offer a product or service that you don't know about. One bad product or service on your list can have them unsubscribing in droves.

10) Develop a strategy

To monetize from the beginning, but don't start trying to monetize yet. In other words, start by giving and giving some more. Later, once you've developed trust and a good relationship, start giving them offers that will make you money.

How you treat your list members is everything. Treat them as valued customers and give them exclusive deals, and they'll stick with you for the long haul.

To your success
