?Girls Around Me? Creeper App Just Might Get People To Pay Attention To Privacy Settings

girlsaroundme1Cult of Mac has a great write-up of an app for iOS called Girls Around Me, which essentially displays check-ins and public profiles of girls around you. With a little shift in context it could easily be confused for a hot new startup (discoverability meets speed dating!), but no, it really is just a way for guys to creep on nearby girls who have failed to lock down their info. It's sad, but maybe something like this is what people need to shock them into understanding just how much information they put online.

Google Maps updated, 50 billion kilometers navigated

Google Maps

Google continues to add features to its Maps service for mobile, and the latest version of Google Maps for Android adds in a couple of small changes which may make it easier to get around. First up, there's a new home screen for Google Maps Navigation on Android 4.0 devices. Secondly, Google's improved the way Maps works on phones with high resolution displays, like the Galaxy Nexus, and optimized the way text and vector graphics are shown on these devices. Finally, you can now prioritize a particular mode of public transport when getting directions, and specify fewer transfers or less walking depending on your preferences. Google says that public transport schedules and directions are now available for 475 cities around the world.

Along with today's update comes the news that Android users have navigated 50 billion kilometers To give a little perspective, Google points out that's ten times the distance from Earth to Neptune, the farthest planet from the Sun. As Maps for Android approaches its fourth birthday, it remains a major differentiating feature for Google's OS. In the very unlikely event that you're not already using it, you can find Google Play Store links after the break.

Spike Lee, latest celeb to practice reckless tweeting

Featured

8 hrs.

Many Egyptians are living without electricity or jobs, and soon, those who still do have access to power may also have to do without online ... Read more

9 hrs.

Spike Lee wasn't the first to retweet the erroneous address on Twitter blindly accepted by many as that of George Zimmerman, the man who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last month. But the filmmaker's message -- sent last week to his 240,000 Twitter followers -- was the most viral.

Elaine McClain, 70, the owner of the misidentified house in Sanford, Florida, and her husband David McClain, 72, tell news outlets they're now "living in fear." The address spread on Twitter, accompanied by threats of violence, and the couple are now staying at a hotel "to avoid the spotlight and possible danger," reports the Orlando Sentinel.

Oh, and Mrs. McClain? She reportedly has a heart condition. Awesome.

So how did this happen? As The Smoking Gun breaks it down, Marcus Davonne Higgins, the 33-year-old Los Angeles man behind the bad address, confused McClain's son, George W. Zimmerman, who once lived at the address, with George Michael Zimmerman, the man who killed Martin. Higgins then blasted the address to the Twitter accounts of Will Smith, 50 Cent, LeBron James, as well as to Lee. But Lee is the only one who retweeted it.

The great big "WRONG!" here isn't the bad address, or whether Lee should research the info before he retweets. And as regrettable as it is, Lee can't be held accountable for giving conservative pundit Michelle Malkin more fuel for Trayvon Martin race baiting on her Twitter "news" site Twitchy. It's this: Celebrities have no business using their position of power and popularity on Twitter to incite a mob.

We decry it when members of 4chan's /b/board broadcast the phone number, address and other identifying info about young girls suddenly popular on the Internet. Here in the West, we're horrified by stories of China's Internet mob, "mobilized to root out, expose and shame people they perceive to be exhibiting corrupt or immoral behavior," sometimes resulting in real-world violence. It's equally not OK for U.S. celebrities to do the same.?

We saw this to a lesser degree last week when Alec Baldwin mustered a Twitter army against someone he claimed was harassing his girlfriend on the Internet. When a celebrity directs his fanatic legion against a person outside a position of power, that's straight-up bullying.

Posting on Twitter, Baldwin gave out the handle of the alleged?harasser, @scarfacemadam, whom he said "has entered the twitter-verse ONLY to harass my girlfriend" in a way "that is borderline threatening." He asked users to "go to her address and read just a few of her posts, and give her your notice of her behavior."

While many of the Twitter attacks against?@scarfacemadam didn't?compare to the jillions of ugly death threats tweeted by Justin Bieber fans on any given day, they weren't pretty. As we noted then,?if the troll harassing his GF really is as bad as he claimed, then it's way to fuel a psycho stalker, Alec Baldwin! Conversely, if the troll was just your run-of-the-mill Internet jerk (with or without diagnosable mental issues), then Baldwin just sent thousands of people in that troll's direction.?

As it turned out, the kerfuffle faded fast soon after the @scarfacemadam account went dormant. It could've been worse. It wasn't.

In Lee's case however, helping chum Twitter could've resulted in violence -- against an innocent elderly couple or a man yet to face the justice system -? as well as a jail sentence for any Lee fans who took his retweet to heart. ?

Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about the Internet. Tell her to get a real job?on?Twitter?and/or?Facebook. Also,?Google+.

AVADirect Quiet X79 Gaming PC

When you're shopping for a serious gaming desktop, you tend to snag the most powerful machine when you abandon all monetary constraints. But it doesn't have to be that way. Although the AVADirect Quiet X79 Gaming PC ($3,100 direct) will never be confused with a budget system, this mid-size rig has undeniable gaming chops and will cost you less than competing systems. Its powerful processor and smart storage arrangement are enough to chew through any processing task, and its high-end video card ratchets up the system's gaming performance to a competitive level. You can find more powerful gaming desktops, but this one is a solid choice if you don't want your PC to take over your room or kill your budget.

Design and Features
AVADirect has used as the case for the Quiet X79 Gaming PC a white version of the NZXT H2, which sports accents of a bare metal panel on the front tower door and blue and white glowing LEDs. It's a look similar to that of the Polywell Ignition X7900i-3960 ($4,599 street, 4 stars), but cleaner?and much more sedate than the flame paint-job on the iBuypower Chimera 4-V1 ($2,499 direct, 4 stars).

On the top panel you'll find a power button, three USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, headphone and microphone jacks, and a three-speed fan controller. A magnetic plastic cover hides the top fan vent, but can be easily adjusted or removed to improve airflow. A snapping cover also serves as a lid for a SATA-equipped hot-swappable drive bay.

On the front of the tower you'll find a Blu-ray (BD-RE) optical drive, and a 65-in-1 card reader that accommodates every major media card format, including SD/MMC, microSD, CF/MD, MS/Pro/Duo, and xD, plus another USB 2.0 port thrown in for good measure. On the back of the tower you'll find scads of connections, with six USB 2.0 ports (one of which is occupied by a Bluetooth receiver), four USB 3.0 ports, a USB BIOS flashback port, and two USB/eSATA combination ports. The Gigabit Ethernet port is your only networking option, as the Silent Gaming PC has no Wi-Fi. Display outputs include two DVI, one HDMI, and one full-size DisplayPort. There are also several audio outputs, with ports for S/PDIF and eight-channel analog audio.

Pull off the case's side panel (the thumbscrews make it easy) and you'll find that the Quiet X79 Gaming PC is equipped with both a 120GB SSD (which serves as the OS drive) and a silent 2TB Western Digital hard drive (for storage). Plugged into the Asus P9X79 motherboard is a six-core Intel Core i7-3930K processor?the same model found in both the Chimera 4-V1 and the Velocity Micro Raptor Z90 (Intel Core i7-3930K) ($4,999 direct, 3.5 stars)?equipped with a giant heat sink?fan unit to keep it cool, and an overclocked Asus video card based on the Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 GPU. A quintet of whisper-quiet fans keep everything cool.

An 850-watt power supply provides more than enough juice for all of the Quiet X79 Gaming PC's components, and additional hardware if you choose to upgrade?and there are plenty of upgrade options available. Though the system comes equipped with 16GB of RAM, there are four open DIMM slots on the motherboard, which supports up to 64GB total RAM. You'll find four open PCI Express (PCIe) slots, though the two PCIe x1 slots are blocked by the bulky video card, and one open 5.25-inch drive bay; four SATA ports are also free.

Because this is a custom gaming rig, you'll find that the hard drive is immaculate, with the only software installed being Windows 7 Professional. The Quiet X79 Gaming PC also comes with AVADirect's Silver Warranty Package, a three-year warranty on parts and labor.

Performance
AVADirect Quiet X79 Gaming PC In our tests the Quiet X79 Gaming PC proved it's able to mix it up with much more expensive gaming rigs. It tore through our processor-intensive Photoshop CS5 test in 2 minutes 31 seconds?ahead of the Polywell Ignition X7900i-3960 (2:34) and the iBuypower Chimera 4-V1 (2:42), but behind the 2:21 of the Digital Storm ODE Level 3 ($2,399 direct, 4.5 stars) and the 2:22 of the Velocity Micro Raptor Z90 (2:22). It finished Handbrake in 58 seconds, beating out the Chimera 4-V1 (1:03) and tying with the Ignition X7900i-3960 (0:58), but falling short of the ODE Level 3 (0:56).

AVADirect Quiet X79 Gaming PC

The Quiet X79 Gaming PC pumped out respectable frame rates in our gaming tests, cranking through Crysis and Lost Planet 2 at 43 frames per second (fps), both at 1,920-by-1080 resolution with 4x anti-aliasing and high detail settings. Although these are playable scores, they can't match those of rigs running multiple graphics cards, like the ODE Level 3 (71 fps in Crysis, 122 fps in Lost Planet 2), which is equipped with two GTX 570 cards, or the Velocity Micro Raptor Z90 (44fps in Crysis, 81fps in Lost Planet 2), which contains two GTX 580 cards.

The AVADirect Quiet X79 Gaming PC offers impressive performance and graphics for its relatively modest price tag. If you want a gaming rig that offers similar processing power, better graphics performance and a lower price, you may want to opt for the Digital Storm ODE Level 3, our Editors' Choice for midrange gaming PCs. If you want competitive performance with a realistic price tag, however, the AVADirect Quiet X79 Gaming PC is tough to top.

Ben Cousins: 'Consoles will adapt or die' | Game development ...

It would probably take something extraordinary like a ten-year gardening leave contract, concealed in confidentiality agreements, to prevent Ben Cousins from discussing the demise of console gaming.

He isn?t simply a director who resigned from Electronic Arts. He is a sharp and outspoken businessman who, since 1999, has accumulated privileged knowledge of the traditional games sector across two console generations.

Now he?s gone; fleeing to the mobile and social sector that he, rightly or wrongly, portrays as if it were a lifeboat escape from a sinking tanker of discs and boxes.

Unlike the executives that shuffle sideways from one traditional publisher to the next, Cousins has abandoned that side of the business entirely. Today he runs the Sweden division mobile group Ngmoco, owned by Asia?s casual games titan Dena.

He can say what he wants, and does.

Tomorrow he will be in London to keynote the inaugural F2P conference, to discuss the past and future of freemium games.

In the Q&A below, Develop discussed some of the themes he will be speaking on.

Tell us more about what you?ll be discussing during your F2P keynote.

I?ve been working in freemium since the 2006 on PlayStation Home. We really didn?t have a clue what we were doing back then and freemium was just happening in Korea.

I think looking back it is easier to forget how completely different the gaming landscape was in 2006. We had this almost completely predominant packaged goods business back then, and all the concerns were about making great 3D graphics, building multiplayer into your games. The main subject of discussion was about sequels and lack of innovation.

At that time I was working with a team in Korea for Battlefield Heroes, which was a real learning experience.

Korean game developers are often seen as being far ahead of the curve when it comes to online content. Was it an eye opener to see how they operated?

Yeah it was. Some of the things they said about freemium and social at the time have completely become commonplace these days. They originated this idea of releasing your game and building it in front of your customers ? to shape your game from community feedback.

That was a completely new and radical idea for us. It took us a while to get out of our old-world mentality and adopt to these new ways of thinking.

But the western world in general was behind on this. Even when we announced Battlefield Heroes, I think in 2007, there was a lot of skepticism about this type of game.

People didn?t agree that this free-to-play model would work, even though it was working amazingly in places like Korea.

These days, of course, we have numerous huge free-to-play games like Team Fortress and League of Legends and the rest.

It?s been really interesting to see how these perceptions have changed. Really without realising it, the west now has this incredibly popular and new way of playing games.

Would you agree that the frontrunners of the free-to-play business model are of a certain genre? Can freemium be applied to many more game types?

Well ultimately it?s a business model that is separate from the platforms they?re hosted on. Social games, or Facebook games, are one variety. Then you have other games like League of Legends, and freemium on mobile is becoming a big business too.

It?s true that the headline-grabbing free-to-play games are the ones that you see on Facebook, but there is a whole industry behind this model.

The only platform where freemium isn?t making a huge impact is on the consoles and that?s because the console holders, as I understand it, are scared of it. They don?t want to get involved in free-to-play because it could break their business model.

There is the argument that free-to-play builds direct communication lines between players and developers, and so it takes the platform owners out of the equation, which is something they want to avoid.

Yes it?s a very dangerous attitude for them, I think. There will be a perception within these companies, because they are very inexperienced in this area, that they will be thinking that if they allow a high-quality free-to-play experience on their console it will eat into sales of premium games.

They will be thinking they make more money, from a licensing fees standpoint, from packaged goods than from virtual currency.

I think that?s misunderstanding the way the business model works, to be honest.

Perhaps at some stage they?ll have to adopt to this model, if it continues to grow in popularity and, perhaps, allure more of the core market.

Yes it will be ?adopt or die? for the console holders. I spoke at GDC about the challenges that the traditional platform holders face as the likes of Google and Apple and Facebook ? which are really wealthy companies ? move into their territory.

These new competitors have already opened up their platforms. I?m not sure anyone at Apple really wanted iPads and iPhones to be so closely linked to games systems, but they opened the platform and the business model and it thrived. I mean, I think about half of App Store revenues last year were from free-to-play games.

I think the most recent study claimed it was 70% of all revenues.

And I think that number will only get higher. I think it will get to ninety per cent and rise even further. This is essentially a economics principal known as reduction to marginal cost, which theorises that if something costs nothing to distribute then someone in the marketplace will try and sell it for nothing to gain customers.

Maybe that?s what the platform holders are scared of. Maybe they think that if someone creates a Call of Duty game that?s free-to-play then they?ll lose all the licensing fees associated with sales of the premium edition.

There is still a market desire for premium content, though, and surely certain freemium models can distort that?

I don?t think so, no. I can give you many examples of freemium games in Asia that now have made more than a billion dollars in lifetime revenue.

I would guess that League of Legends will be a billion dollars in lifetime revenue as well. As soon as people crack the code in terms of making money from free-to-play, then you?ll once again get this arms race for quality much like we have now.

I think there is a good chance in ten years time that freemium games of incredibly high production values will be the norm.

Do you see this as the predominant model for all games?

Certainly the PC games space is already accepting it, and freemium is already dominating the mobile space too.

This trend will continue on all platforms that are open, and the console holders will have to ask themselves serious questions. Do consoles become the only place where you get that kind of experience, or do people start moving away from consoles onto other platforms because they aren?t adapting, and if that were to happen, will games consoles even be a viable business model?

There?s a very interesting few years ahead of us.

What interests Develop in particular is the re-education of the game development workforce. You can see it in the UK right now; there are so many traditional triple-A developers now suddenly running small independent start-ups discussing ARPU and player retention tactics. They used to be obsessed with feature lists and multiplayer.

I was talking about this recently. The UK is in a really funny position. Sweden never really had much of a packaged goods industry. DICE is a big studio and Avalanche is fairly sized, but there is now a big workforce building games because of non-console platforms.

What the UK games industry tends to not have is a vast entrepreneurial culture, with established ties to venture capital firms. So Britain?s almost stuck between the old and new, and you wonder how it?s going to get out of this glut.

I mean there aren?t any huge start-ups in the mobile and social scene in the UK -

Well there?s Bossa, there?s Mind Candy, there?s Ustwo, Makie Labs, Inensu-

-I remember people were saying Runescape was going to be the next big thing, but they haven?t really hit the heights of what, say, Bigpoint has. There hasn?t been that social or mobile games sensation in the UK, and I just hope that happens.

But going back to the re-education of games developers, as you call it, there is a trend in any business sector that goes through a revolution where the most senior people stick to what they know and the young people are quicker to adopt to a new model.

I think it?s a shame, really, that a lot of people in the traditional gaming industry seem very resistant, almost aggressively resistant, to making free-to-play games.

There was only a few companies that successfully transitioned from the arcade to console business. Nintendo did it, Sega did okay, and then you have the likes of Midway and Atari who never got in their stride.

Did you see Iwata?s speech at GDC last year?

Some of the things he says makes me really fear for the future of Nintendo.

I think there is a cognitive dissonance at Nintendo in terms of getting their heads around what?s actually happening to the industry, which is such a shame because they make such fantastic games.

With the App Store, what tends to happen is the good games rise to the top. Under Nintendo?s system there is more negotiation and arranging marketing and promotion.

From a user-perspective, when you go on the App Store and you look at the top selling games, most of them are good quality and good value for money.

I actually feel more optimistic about the future of PC games than the consoles, to be honest.

Why?s that?

Because the new platforms are moving directly onto the console?s market. One of the reason why consoles sell 170 million units is because of the many causal players who buy just one or two games per year.

Those casual players, who are the kind of engine room of the console economy, are now interested in social or mobile games.

I just think the platform holders? billion dollar investments in new hardware is no longer sustainable.

RIM putting BlackBerry 10 test units in developers' hands in May

It's telling, perhaps, when a VP for your company uses the word "finally" while discussing plans to release test models for your upcoming mobile operating system -- but it's certainly a pretty accurate sentiment when dealing BlackBerry 10. Talking up RIM's plans to release up to 2,000 prototypes running the OS at the BlackBerry Jam conference in May, executive Alec Saunders had this to say: "It's tangible evidence of the company making progress to finally shipping the device." Barring any further setbacks, the operating system formerly known as BBX is set to hit before year's end.

[Thanks, Neil]

Afghan killings: Bales charged with 17 murder counts

AP,file

Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, left, 1st platoon sergeant, Blackhorse Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division participates in an August 2011 exercise at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales was charged Friday with?17 counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder, along with other charges, in connection with a shooting rampage in two southern Afghanistan villages that shocked Americans back home and further roiled U.S.-Afghan relations.

The charges come almost two weeks after the massacre in which Bales allegedly left his base in the early morning hours and shot Afghan civilians, including women and nine children, while they slept in their beds, then burned some of the bodies.

Military wives rally around Karilyn Bales

It was the worst allegation of civilian killings by an American and has severely strained U.S.-Afghan ties at a critical time in the decade-old war.

?Bales was read the charges on Friday at the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he has been held since being flown from Afghanistan last week, a U.S. official said.

For alleged Afghan shooter, death penalty unlikely

Bales' civilian attorney, John Henry Browne, said Friday without commenting on the specific charges that he believes the government will have a hard time proving its case and that at some stage in the prosecution his client's mental state will be an important issue.

Death toll in Afghanistan massacre climbs to 17

Col. Gary Kolb, a spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan, says Bales was also charged Friday with six counts of attempted murder and six counts of assault.

The decision to charge him with premeditated murder suggests that prosecutors plan to argue that he consciously conceived the killings. A military legal official for U.S. forces in Afghanistan who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the case, noted that premeditated murder is not something that has to have been contemplated for a long time.

Criminal charges including 17 counts of murder and six counts of assault have been brought against Sgt. Robert Bales for alleged actions in Afghanistan. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports this is the first step toward the eventual filing of charges.

?

?These are unsurprising charges, predictable charges. I would have thought there would have been a few more lesser charges because no prosecutor likes to lose his principal charge and see the individual walk so usually some lesser offenses are charged as well,? Gary Solis, former head of the Marine Corps? Military Law Branch and current adjunct professor of law at Georgetown Law School, told msnbc.com.

?But what will really be significant is when the charges are referred to trial by the convening authority ? because when they are referred, they will either be referred as capital or not. ? If referred capital, that will change the complexion of the case.?

A senior U.S. official tells NBC News that Bales is likely to face lesser charges?such as dereliction of duty and?disobeying a lawful order.

The 38-year-old soldier and father of two, whose home is in Bonney Lake, Wash., faces trial under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, but it could be months before any public hearing.

Legal jurisdiction in the Bales case is expected to be switched Friday from U.S. Forces-Afghanistan in Kabul to Bales' home base of Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Wash., U.S. officials said.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said Bales could face the death penalty if he is convicted of murder, but it is unlikely. The U.S. military has not executed a service member since 1961. Legal experts say Bales could face a lengthy prison sentence if convicted.

The maximum punishment for a premeditated murder conviction is death, dishonorable discharge from the armed forces, reduction to the lowest enlisted grade and total forfeiture of pay and allowances, Kolb said. The mandatory minimum sentence is life imprisonment with the chance of parole.

Retired Army Colonel and NBC military analyst Jack Jacobs examines the concerns set forth by the attorney for Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, the soldier who was charged Friday with 17 counts of murder.

How Staff Sgt. Bales' lawyers are fighting for his life

Legal experts have said the death penalty would be unlikely in the case. The military hasn't executed a service member since 1961 when an Army ammunition handler was hanged for raping an 11-year-old girl in Austria. None of the six men currently on death row at Fort Leavenworth was convicted for atrocities against foreign civilians.

?This is just the first step in what?s going to be a very long process and it still remains to be seen whether this is actually going to be a death penalty case or not,? Daniel Conway, a lawyer and former Marine staff sergeant who has been involved in battlefield investigations in Iraq and Afghanistan of alleged crimes by U.S. soldiers, told msnbc.com. ?The basic idea here is that you can?t hold somebody in jail forever without charging them, so they?ve had to take this first step here.?

The charging document did not provide details about the killings, leaving the timeline unclear. The dead bodies were found in Balandi and Alkozai villages ? one north and one south of the base.

Members of the Afghan delegation investigating the killings said one Afghan guard working from midnight to 2 a.m. saw a U.S. soldier return to the base around 1:30 a.m. Another Afghan soldier who replaced the first and worked until 4 a.m. said he saw a U.S. soldier leaving the base at 2:30 a.m. It's unknown whether the Afghan guards saw the same U.S. soldier. If the gunman acted alone, information from the Afghan guards would suggest that he returned to base in between the shooting sprees.

It also is not known whether the suspect used grenades, Kolb said. The grenade launcher attachment is added to the standard issue M-4 rifle for some soldiers but not all, he said. Bales was assigned to provide force protection at the base.

Officials: Iranian arms used against Syria protesters

Europe's attempts to punish Syria's brutal regime turned today to the British-born wife of President Assad. Asma al-Assad was banned from traveling to Europe and her financial assets were frozen. But the sanctions may be largely impotent, as a UK passport holder she can't be prevented from entering the UK. ITV's Paul Davies reports

By Reuters

WASHINGTON -- Iran is providing a broad array of assistance to Syrian President Bashar Assad to help him suppress anti-government protests, from high-tech surveillance technology to guns and ammunition, U.S. and European security officials say.

Tehran's technical assistance to Assad's security forces includes electronic surveillance systems, technology designed to disrupt efforts by protesters to communicate via social media, and Iranian-made drone aircraft for overhead surveillance, the officials said. They discussed intelligence matters on condition of anonymity.

"Over the past year, Iran has provided security assistance to Damascus to help shore up Assad. Tehran during the last couple of months has been aiding the Syrian regime with lethal assistance - including rifles, ammunition, and other military equipment -- to help it put down the opposition," a U.S. official said.

"Iran has provided Damascus (with) monitoring tools to help the regime suppress the opposition. It has also shared techniques on Internet surveillance and disruption," the official continued.

Syrians brave gunfire in anti-Assad protests

He added that Iran had also provided Assad's government with "unarmed drones that Damascus is using along with its own technology to monitor opposition forces."

Syria's rebel fighters are desperate for arms and ammunition. Members of the Free Syrian Army were forced from Idlib - one of the last rebel strongholds. ITN's John Irvine reports from outskirts of Idlib, the north western city which rebels surrendered last week.

Iranian security officials have also traveled to Damascus to advise Assad's entourage how to counter dissent, the official said. Some Iranian officials have stayed on in Syria to advise Assad's forces, he added.

Iran's multi-pronged security aid to Syria appears to have helped Assad's government in its increasingly violent campaign to hold on to power in the face of a year-long protest movement. The United Nations estimates 8,000 civilians have died in the conflict.

However, the U.S. and European officials said the Syrian government's survival is not totally dependent on continuing help from Tehran.

Assad's wife banned from traveling, shopping in EU

U.S. and allied official broadly agree that Assad's control remains solid. His opponents are hopelessly disorganized, the officials said, which may make it possible for the Syrian president and his entourage to hold onto power for years.

"At current levels Iranian aid is important but not really a game changer in the overall conflict," a U.S. official noted.

Paul Conroy, a photographer for the Sunday Times, was badly injured while on assignment in Syria and his colleague ? legendary war correspondent Marie Colvin was killed. Conroy joins NBC's Andrea Mitchell to reflect on the situation.

Iran has for decades been a patron to Syria, which has helped funnel aid and weapons to the Iranian-backed Shiite Muslim militia Hezbollah in Lebanon.

During the protests that followed Iran's disputed 2009 presidential election -- the biggest mass protests since the Islamic Republic's founding in 1979 -- Iranian authorities disrupted social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as cell phone networks.

Iran's internal crackdown reportedly has escalated since then.

Wounded Syrians recount horror of tank attacks

A European official said that the Iranians were providing Syrian security agencies with hardware and software that would help them disrupt efforts to organize protests inside Syria and efforts by anti-government elements to spread their message to supporters outside the country.

European suppliers
Officials said that Syria had also obtained some surveillance technology from European suppliers.

As protests against Assad's rule grew last year, the United States first raised the possibility that Iranian authorities were helping their Syrian counterparts suppress dissent.

Finally, UN reaches agreement over 'extremely dangerous crisis' in Syria

Last June the U.S. Treasury Department announced economic sanctions against two of Iran's most senior police officials for allegedly helping Assad's government crush protests.

The Treasury imposed U.S. economic sanctions on Ismail Ahmadi Moghadam and Ahmad-Reza Radan, chief and deputy chief of Iran's national police force, because their agency had "provided support to the Syrian General Intelligence Directorate and dispatched personnel to Damascus in April to assist the Syrian government in suppressing the Syrian people."

The Treasury alleged that Radan had traveled to Damascus to meet with Syrian security agencies, to whom he allegedly provided "expertise to aid in the Syrian government crackdown on the Syrian people."

Activist: Assad's crackdown turning peaceful Syrians into terrorists

U.S. officials said Iranian efforts to bolster Syria's surveillance capabilities have been supplemented by deliveries to Syria of Iranian-made unarmed surveillance drone aircraft.

Earlier this month a specialized website, The Aviationist, reported that a drone flying over the city of Homs, the site of recent violent clashes between government and opposition forces, had been identified as a "Pahpad" drone, which the website said meant "remotely piloted aircraft" in Farsi.

Saudi Arabia will deliver military equipment to Syrian rebels in an effort to stop the bloodshed. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

In February another specialized website, Open Source GEOINT, published freeze-frame images from what purported to be an amateur cameraman's video of a suspected drone flying over a Damascus suburb.

Iran vows to retaliate 'on the same level' to US or Israel attack

The website noted that some news reports had suggested that the United States was flying intelligence drones over Syria but that the drone in the pictures did not appear to be a U.S. model.

The website cited speculation that the drone might be of Iranian origin. Ynet News, an Israeli website, reported this month that Syria's defense industry produces drones that are technologically identical to Iranian-produced models and speculated that these domestically produced models were what Syrian security forces had deployed.

Report: 'I am the real dictator,' Bashar's wife says

However, a U.S. official said that some of Syria's drones had come directly from Iran.

Last weekend the Iranian news agency Fars announced that Iranian experts had produced what it called a "new type of drone" known as the Shaparak, or "Butterfly," which it said was "capable of carrying out military and border patrol missions."

Why It’s So Hard to Build a Wing-Flapping Flying Machine

When a man identifying himself as Jarno Smeets uploaded a video to YouTube of himself apparently taking flight with a homemade flapping wing, it immediately went viral and set off a tidal wave of joy and wonderment: He can fly like a bird! Just as quickly, a backlash of derision followed. Impossible, the doubters declared?it?s a hoax. And indeed, some deeper reporting and analysis cast serious doubt on the video's authenticity. Finally, he admitted it was a hoax.

But for a while, the possibility lingered: Humanity?s aspiration to become a creature of the air, a dream even older than Icarus, had at last been made reality.

One person who watched the clip with particular interest was Todd Reichert, a newly minted Ph.D. from the University of Toronto Institute for Aeronautical Studies. Reichert headed a team from the university that built a human-powered ornithopter?an aircraft that propels itself by flapping its wings like a bird or a bat. In 2010 Reichert climbed into the craft, the Snowbird, and piloted it on a record-setting flight. He is the rarest of bird imitators: a veteran ornithopter pilot who has actually flapped his way through the air.

As Reichert watched the Smeets video, his first impression was that it seemed more or less plausible. The wings were a little too short, he thought, and the backpack power unit was a bit too small?but not egregiously so. Then came the takeoff, the moment when the pilot?s feet leave the ground and the craft climbs steeply into the air. It was at that moment, Reichert says, that he realized the tape was a fake. "Just at first glance, it?s not even close," he says.

To those of us who are not ornithopter pilots, it might not be immediately obvious why this is so. After all, birds can climb even more steeply than Smeets did. So can bats and insects. In fact, winged flight is so easy that it?s evolved independently in the animal kingdom at least four times. "A wing can give you better propulsive efficiency than a propeller," Reichert says.

But the way a bird flies is very different from the way a mechanical ornithopter does. Reichert is well aware of this, because the subject of his doctoral thesis was comparing the flight dynamics of animals with those of man-made craft. It turns out that birds are light-years ahead of us humans when it comes to flapping wings. "A bird is constantly changing the shape of its wing as it flies, folding it in on the upstroke and back out on the downstroke," he says. (For an excellent example, check out this video of an eagle owl in flight at 1000 frames per second.) "It also moves the wing faster on the downstroke than the upstroke. So you see them doing all these complicated extra motions, and with each layer of complexity, the bird becomes more and more efficient. An ornithopter wing, in contrast, is just flapping up and down."

That is why Reichert?s own ornithopter performance was much less impressive than the video of Smeets the Internet became smitten with this week. (Though Reichert?s performance gets bonus points for being, you know, real.) For its record-setting flight, his team towed Snowbird into the air to an altitude of a few feet, then managed to maintain airborne for less than a minute as it flapped along, holding its altitude but gradually losing speed. Not a barn-burning performance by the standards of conventional aviation, perhaps, yet it still ranks as the most impressive human-powered flapping-wing flight so far.

Reichert?s wing could have been more efficient, he says, if his team had tried to emulate the complexity of a bird?s wing. "The problem is, in engineering that?s not the way to go," he says. "You don?t want to say, ?Oh, let?s add complexity to get efficiency.? "

One obvious way to boost performance, of course, is to add an engine. (Smeets?s contraption was purported to include a battery pack and electric actuators.) The history of powered manned ornithopters dates back to 1942, when a German engineer named Adalbert Schmid reportedly built one powered by a 6-hp engine that was able to take off under its own power and fly for 15 minutes. Nathan Chronister, who has been documenting the romance of winged flight for years on his website, The Ornithopter Zone, says that theoretically there?s no reason someone couldn?t pull off what Smeets claimed to achieve. "It can be done," he says.

But, he says, an actual functioning craft "wouldn?t look quite like [Smeets?s]." The wing would need to be longer and more rigid for efficiency, and it would need some means of stabilization to keep from tumbling out of the sky. And, he says, it would not be a strap-on wing?"that configuration has shown to be extremely dangerous"?but instead a craft that the pilot can strap into.

Reichert agrees that something like Smeets? contraption could be feasible. "Someone could do this," he says. "But the challenge is so huge. This is not something you could pull off working in your backyard for a couple of months."

Someday, then, someone might actually bring the dream come to life. Jarno Smeets just didn?t happen to be the one to pull it off.

Tied secondhand smoke in childhood lung ... - Fitness For Health

childhood lung diseaseOne study found an almost double risk for respiratory disease.

Children exposed to secondhand smoke are nearly twice as likely to develop lung disease called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adulthood, a new study finds.

COPD is a term used for a variety of conditions, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

In the study, Norwegian researchers looked at 433 adult patients with COPD and 325 adults without the disease to assess risk factors for the condition, which causes breathing difficulties and worse over time.

Women exposed to secondhand smoke in childhood were 1.9 times more risk of developing lung disease than those not exposed, whereas in men exposed to secondhand smoke in childhood risk was between 1.5 and 1.7 times higher than among those not exposed, the researchers found.

In general, childhood exposure to secondhand smoke was a risk factor for developing more powerful COPD that exposure to secondhand smoke in adulthood, according to the report, published in a recent online edition of the journal Respirology.

?Our results suggest that long-term burden of COPD could be reduced if children were exposed to cigarette smoke,? they said in a news release from the journal study author Ane Johannessen and colleagues at the Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen, Norway. ?Moreover, they indicate that the factors affecting the development of lung function in early life have important long-term consequences for adult life.?

Although the study found an association between exposure to secondhand smoke in childhood and COPD in adults, did not prove a causal relationship.
