The Indie Fix: The Last Stand ? Union City : Videogame News ...

I don?t play too many browser or Flash games. This isn?t because there aren?t a whole lot of awe?some games there, quite the con?trary. There are too many great online, free-to-play, Flash games and I?m just one man with lim?ited free time. That said, when I noticed a new ?zombie-survival RPG? at Armor Games, I thought I?d take a peak, just for a few min?utes. Next thing I know, it?s 2 in the morning.

Early explo?ration in an aban?doned?home.

The Last Stand games are series of zom?bie shoot?ers that I?d dab?bled with in the past, but never found too engross?ing. That is until this last one. Where as pre?vi?ous entries in the series pit?ted you against a swarm in a small, defen?si?ble area with upgrades and weapons for pur?chase between attacks, Union City has a much larger scope. After cre?at?ing your char?ac?ter, you?re plunked down in one part of town shortly after the zom?bie apoc?a?lypse begins. Rely?ing heav?ily on RPG mechan?ics, you have to kill zom?bies, com?plete mis?sions for other sur?vivors, loot and scav?enge from a range of homes, busi?nesses, and any?thing you can find, and level your char?ac?ter all while try?ing to track down your miss?ing spouse.

A hos?pi?tal safe?house.

There are plenty of skills to choose from and advance as you play the game, includ?ing a secu?rity based skill to get passed locks (with a nice lit?tle mini-game), search?ing skills to help find bet?ter qual?ity loot, com?bat skills in six weapon cat?e?gories, both melee and ranged, and sur?vival skills should you decide to play in sur?vivor mode, which I highly rec?om?mend. The only real dif?fer?ence between this mode and the other, aptly named run-and-gun is that sur?vivor mode has hunger and sleep as needs you must address while you play. As you scav?enge, you?ll find food goods you can hold onto to keep your energy up, and safe houses where you can rest. Go hun?gry long enough, or spend too long with?out sleep and you?ll see your skills decreas?ing, impact?ing your chances of survival.

Get him Boone! ..err, what?ever your name?was.

The game also lets you help other sur?vivors, some of whom will join you and help out in fight?ing the zom?bies. I lost my first com?pan?ion to a swarm attack, but then found a sec?ond helper with a rifle who has been a great part?ner in my explo?ration of the city. I couldn?t help but think of Boone from Fall?out: New Vegas, the sniper who can head shot the bad?dies from a mile away. Basi?cally: awesome!

Head?ing through the sub?ways to bypass a roadblock.

I?m still work?ing my way through the city in search of my part?ner, and I can?t wait to get back to the game, some?thing I couldn?t say about too many Flash games. It?s no sur?prise the game?s cre?ator, going by the han?dle Con Artist, has a num?ber of other well put together games on his site, along with all the major Flash sites like Armor Games and Kon?gre?gate. You can see his list of games at his per?sonal site here.

Oth?er?wise, play the game either at Armor Games or Kon?gre?gate.
